On June 11, 2015, a Washington County jury quickly found Ron’s client not guilty on charges of Assault II and two counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon. Our client faced a mandatory 70 month sentence if she were convicted. The state claimed that client stabbed her estranged boyfriend with a kitchen knife after he entered her apartment and refused to leave. The evidence told a different story. Ron’s client only brandished a kitchen knife in an attempt to get her ex to go. He testified at trial that he got cut when he tried to grab the knife away from her, and that she never assaulted him. Negotiations with the DA’s office proved fruitless, despite compelling evidence that Ron’s client was innocent. Defense of property and lack of criminal intent prevailed.
